The waste industry, especially the solid waste industry has its demands and even though the trash trucks are designed to fit into the industry, regular maintenance is very important. If you are in the garbage collection industry, then the last thing you want is a group of unhappy customers because of unexpected downtime. To ensure that you remain right on schedule every collection day, then you must try and come up with a program and regular routine maintenance should be part of the program so you are assured of the performance. A garbage truck has three key areas which need proper care and when you ensure these three are in top shape then you will have fewer disappointments when working.
1. Compactor body
It can be termed as the main feature of a garbage truck and actually distinguishes it from other trucks. It is what makes it possible to pick waste materials and transport them to the relevant sites. What you need to remember is that it has moving parts most of which are lubrication points that need adequate oiling and greasing to keep the truck performing. Irregular sounds and squeaks when moving the body could mean that the metal parts working together are not lubricated and if not taken care of you might end up with premature damages of the parts. Apart from the lubrication, it helps to check for cracks on metal components in the body. The trucks are operated rigorously and stresses on the components might be inevitable. Do temporary repairs and welding so that you extend the life of the parts. An even better maintenance tip is to ensure that the compactor body is operated as per manufacturer’s guidelines.
2. Hydraulic system
It’s made up of cylinders, high pressure hoses, pump and hydraulic fluid filter. Inspect and have the hydraulic fluid filter replaced so foreign materials do not end up contaminating the fluid. You should consider changing the filter when you change the fluid. The connecting fittings should also be checked for damages because leaks will reduce the performance of the truck. For the hydraulic pump which is the most important part of the system, consider installing pressure test meters to ensure that it remains operating as it should. You should also keep an eye on the hydraulic fluid reservoir; fluid color can tell you of any contamination and you must ensure that there is enough fluid without necessarily overfilling it.
